About Us

The Anchorage Society for Human Resource Management (ASHRM) is the Anchorage chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) since 1974. We proudly serve over 500 members and support a local Student Chapters on the campus of the Wayland Baptist University.

ASHRM is one of a handful of chapters in the United States that have received SHRM’s Pinnacle Award not once, but FOUR times for outstanding achievement in chapter development and contributions to the advancement of effective human resource management. The programs recognized include The Last Recertification Frontier (2013), ASHRM’s Partnership with Mayor’s Diversity Month (2007), HR & Order (2002) and HRCI Certification Study Group (1998).

SHRM is the world’s largest association devoted to human resource management. The Society serves the needs of HR professionals by providing the most comprehensive set of resources available. As an influential voice, SHRM is committed to advancing the human resource profession to ensure that HR is an essential and effective partner in developing and executing organizational strategy.

    ASHRM is a 501(c), non-profit, tax-exempt organization.

SHRM Education available to ASHRM Members

For the past several years, ASHRM has been offering professional study sessions in preparation for the nationally recognized Human Resources Certification Institute’s (HRCI) PHR/SPHR certifications.  ASHRM still supports these certifications and will continue to offer recertification opportunities so that members can maintain their certifications.  Starting in 2015, ASHRM will be offering study sessions in preparation for the new SHRM Certifications, SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP.

In 2011, SHRM began years of extensive research involving thousands of HR professionals to develop the SHRM Competency Model, which identifies eight key Behavioral Competencies: Ethical Practice, Leadership & Navigation, Business Acumen, Relationship Management, Communication, Consultation, Critical Evaluation, and Global & Cultural Effectiveness and one Technical Competency: HR Expertise (HR Knowledge) that are the foundation of successful HR practice.

    • The SHRM Competency Model provides HR professionals with a comprehensive roadmap for developing the capabilities they need to advance their careers and improve their effectiveness in the workplace.
    • The SHRM Competency Model is fundamental to SHRM’s two new certifications, the SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) for early-career practitioners, and the SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) for senior-level practitioners.

SHRM is launching these new credentials to further two goals:

    • For HR professionals, to reaffirm the importance of acquiring both the competencies and knowledge essential for successful job performance;
    • For employers, to provide reliable indicators of proficiency in these critical dual aspects of modern HR practice.

SHRM regards the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP as the new standard in certification for the HR profession. By incorporating key HR competencies into the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP, SHRM is enhancing the relevance of the new certifications. SHRM’s new credentials demonstrate to the global business community that the credential holder has strong capabilities in both aspects of HR practice—competency and knowledge—that are required for effective job performance.

    Certification and Re-certification

    Certification

For those professionals wanting to try a different approach to preparing for their exams, ASHRM is proud and excited to offer professional study sessions. These study sessions, facilitated by  Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) from our own ASHRM membership, have become valuable for a multitude of reasons including their high pass rate, fabulous networking opportunities and the informal, comfortable participation enjoyed by participants.

    Re-certification

The Anchorage Chapter for the Society of Human Resources Management (ASHRM) is dedicated to helping you recertify by offering various presentations with pre-approved certification credit.

Our monthly luncheons and other, low-cost training opportunities are pre-approved for SHRM and HRCI credit!

The Alaska State HR Conference, which the Anchorage Chapter plays a major role in presenting, is awarded recertification credits too!

Professional Study Sessions for SHRM Certification

Our Education & Certification Committee works cooperatively together to offer two different four-month sessions for each SHRM testing window. This is eight months of learning each year!

Using the SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge (SHRM BoCK™), SHRM Learning System as their guide, SMEs offer two-hour study sessions each week during the four-month period. A study session schedule for each four-month session is prepared in advance for your review. As you can see from this schedule, ASHRM is serious about your preparation; these study groups are not for the faint at heart!

The SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge (SHRM BoCK™), Learning System includes five modules:

    • HR Competencies
    • People
    • Organization
    • Workplace
    • Strategy

For more information about the SHRM Certification, visit:  http://www.shrm.org/certification

In addition to reviewing all the material found in these modules, ASHRM offers instruction and guidance on issues such as:

    • Adult Learning Styles;
    • Testing Anxiety; and
    • Study and Testing Strategies.

With the help of many fabulous volunteers, they are able to present “subject specific” material and discussion for each competency as well as facilitate small, personal “boot camps” for those individuals wanting to “turn up” their studying a notch or two. Participants can refer to the schedule for more information about the boot camp schedule and commitment.

If you are an HR Professional and wish to sit for the upcoming professional exams, contact the Education & Workforce Development team today! They offer the chance to prepare for and succeed at your professional certification exam and they offer the opportunity to meet many, many colleagues in the Anchorage area that can help you become a valuable member of the HR community. Through networking and partnering with colleagues having expertise you are lacking, you can more easily build your knowledge base and build upon your professional resources.

Need the SHRM Learning System Study Materials?

Participants of the ASHRM Study sessions can order the SHRM Learning Modules at a reduced rate. Information on ordering these materials through ASHRM will be distributed at the beginning of each four-month study session.

    Volunteer Information

Many Thanks to our Educational Volunteers!

The Education & Certification Committee has many volunteers who help make the ASHRM Study Sessions a success. Subject Matter Experts help present the SHRM Learning Modules information and additional facilitators help with the intense, small group “boot camp” focused on strict and disciplined review of the materials just prior to the testing dates.

Many thanks to the volunteers who have given their time and expertise to help others increase their knowledge of Human Resources; we couldn’t do this without you!

In addition, local organizations have generously offered their training and conference rooms to ASHRM so we can continue to offer these study sessions at a very low cost to our participants. Many thanks to the many businesses who have made available their rooms each and every week!

Do you want to “pay it forward” and help other professionals increase their knowledge and gain their certification? The Education & Workforce Development team would love to put you to work! Contact them today to see how you can help!
